Yoga in West Sussex
What is Yoga?
Yoga is a combination of breathing techniques (pranayama), hand gestures (mudras), flowing movements and poses (asanas) and relaxation (savasana).
The word Yoga in Sanskrit means 'union' or 'yoke'. It can be seen as a moving meditation, bringing with it a sense of calmness and stability to the mind to help us with our journey through life with ease and purpose.
There are many different styles of 'Yoga' in the Western world which have evolved, some more physical and some more meditative.
You do not have to be flexible or fit to benefit from yoga. You are guided to work at your own level, it is not a competition and you should not compare yourself with the person next to you, in front or behind you in class.
We are all unique and what comes naturally and easily to one individual may be much harder for another. Also, one day we may feel very different; we may be calm or more anxious, we may have more energy or have better balance than on other days when we feel more tired or wobbly.
However, with regular practice your breathing, focus, balance and flexibility will improve and you will find that you'll master positions you never thought were possible at the beginning when you first started your yoga practice.
It is interesting to note that as we get older, the practice of yoga can help relieve or manage aches and pains and many other health issues, especially with attention to a good diet, to what and how we eat, drink and breathe.
