At this time of year, as Spring moves into Summer, I’m always covered in dog hair! Our lovely girl needs brushing every day, she’s so fluffy that her fur comes out by the handful. And as I pull tufts of hair from her coat, it got me thinking… about menopause and about shedding the old that’s no longer needed to make way for the new.
Nature moves through its seasons without resistance. Winter brings dormancy, a slowing down, a quiet pause. Spring arrives with fresh growth as vibrant greens burst through the soil, birds start nesting, and life begins anew. Summer is full of energy and expansion, with nature blossoming and fruiting in abundance. Then comes autumn, a time of letting go, of slowing down, and allowing the leaves to fall, making way for rest and regeneration.
Menopause is no different. It’s a natural, vital stage in a woman’s life. Not something to fear or dread, but to honour.
Our bodies are incredible. We are not just a collection of parts, we are a whole being: a community of organs, systems, microbiomes, and energies all working together in harmony. When one part is out of balance, others feel the strain. But every single day, our bodies strive for balance, for homeostasis, adjusting, adapting, and healing when given the right tools.
Menopause is the body’s way of shifting. It’s a shedding of what’s no longer needed, hormones that once supported our childbearing years begin to decline naturally, as their purpose changes. Oestrogen and progesterone reduce not because something is “wrong” but because they’re no longer needed in the same way. Other parts of the body, other systems, step in and provide what’s needed for you, in the exact quantities you need.
Every day, your body adjusts your hormones in response to your lifestyle, your stress levels, your environment, your movement, your rest, your skin care, your cleaning products, even the air you breathe and the thoughts you think.
Menopause is not an ending. It’s a shift, an opening.
It’s a time when many women feel a pull to reclaim themselves. Often, the children have grown, the career ladder climbed. The monthly cycle and concerns of fertility are no longer front and centre. There is space now, just for you.
Energetically, we shift too. Many women feel their creative energy rise from the sacral chakra (linked with sensuality, sexuality, and creation) up to the throat chakra, the energy centre of expression and truth. This is often when women begin to speak up more, express their needs, set clearer boundaries and live more authentically.
It’s also when many women choose to change careers, start a business, or pursue something more meaningful, not just for themselves, but to make a difference in the lives of others.
But when we are not in flow, when our thoughts are heavy, emotions low, and toxins high, that’s when symptoms of menopause can become more intense. This is when it can feel like a negative, worrying, or painful experience.
Yet, when we approach the body as a whole; the mind, body, and soul, and support it with natural tools, we can reduce stress and inflammation, rebalance hormones, and return to a place of wellness. The shift doesn’t have to be one of suffering. It can be one of awakening.
Menopause is a transition and it’s also a transformation.
